Teacher of the Year
Sixth grade math and science teacher Angela Kincaid is the 2023-2024 Chatham Charter Teacher of the Year. Her 20-year career in education has primarily focused on mathematics. In 2007 she and her family moved from Michigan to North Carolina. Mrs. Kincaid worked in Cumberland County Schools and Lee County Schools before coming to Chatham Charter six years ago.
What inspired her to become a math teacher?
“I actually hated math and would come home in tears often when I had an algebra class as a high school freshman. In later classes, I still struggled to understand in how the math was being taught. My older brother knew how to do upper level math, but could not explain it to me either. At some point I had an “ah ha” moment and “the light bulb came on.” Since then, I’ve loved math. My own experiences led me to want to be a math teacher so other students didn’t have to go through what I did,” said Mrs. Kincaid.
Having students benefit from excellent math instruction is fulfilling for Mrs. Kincaid. She relishes the challenges of guiding her current students to continually improve their math skills and enjoys seeing former students doing well. Recently, she saw a young man she taught at least 12 years ago in Sanford who recognized her. As they reminisced she also took the opportunity to encourage him about his job.
What is one of her favorite lesson topics?
“I particularly enjoy lessons involving geometry because there are many hands on, real world applications. We use everyday items to tie into the math concepts. The students enjoy it more and tend to pick up on it faster,” explained Mrs. Kincaid.
