Colonial Days in 5th Grade

Fifth graders at Chatham Charter brought the Colonial period to life in an annual event on Tuesday, November 14. Prior to the presentations they shared other elementary classes and guests, the students learned about the 13 original colonies, the Jamestown settlement, and how Colonial life was different than life today.
The majority of students worked with partners to represent various aspects of Colonial life. Food, job types, housing, education and clothing were examples of topics the students shared as visitors rotated around the multipurpose room. The students researched their topics, added visuals to trifold boards, and prepared talking points to share. Many also had examples of items related to their topics that were either replicas or versions they created.
Along with presentations, the students have been creating research papers that they will finalize in completing the unit.
